Opera Academy of the Midwest Opens Inaugural SeasonJuly 3, 2015
(WICHITA, July 3, 2015) – Wednesday, July 1st marked the grand opening of Wichita Grand Opera’s new Opera Academy of the Midwest. 20 promising young singers from all over the U.S. and abroad gathered at the McPherson Opera House in McPherson, Kansas, for an official welcome from Parvan Bakardiev, President and CEO of Wichita Grand Opera; John Holecek, Executive Director of the McPherson Opera house; and Tom Brown, the Mayor of McPherson.

Throughout the month of July, students and faculty will be in residence at the McPherson Opera House and Central Christian College for three weeks of intensive study and rehearsal. The Academy’s distinguished guest artists and faculty include world-renowned artists, conductors, singers, and coaches including Martin Mazik, Annalisa Raspagliosi, Samuel Ramey, Alan Held, Lynne Davis, and William Powers.
Academy Fellows will be featured in three gala performances: on July 17th at the McPherson Opera House, on July 18th at Wichita Grand Opera’s annual Opera on the Lake at Bradley Fair in Wichita, and on August 7th at the Stiefel Theatre in Salina, KS. The Academy’s brightest students will also take part in WGO’s mainstage opera season in Wichita running through the month of October.
