Many of those that attended our new production of Puccini’s Turandot, either in Wichita on August 28th or in Overland Park, on August 30th have voiced their admiration for all our hard work. Here is a small collection of the best:
The WGO production of “Turandot” was simply magnificent. The entire cast received a 10 minute enthusiastic standing ovation when the show ended. The reviewers complaints are mere quibbles compared to the enjoyment the audience felt. The efforts of Vassileva as Turandot, Ramey as Timur, Park as Liu, and Tamura as Calaf were warmly received. Tamura’s “Nessun Dorma” was outstanding. The Chorus was wonderful and the costumes were glorious. And the pacing was amazing. Most operas plod but this one moved right along.

The Lyric should try to figure out how the WGO put this level of a cast together with smaller resources. The Lyric hasn’t put together a cast this good Since the Montagues & Capulets.

I attended an incredible performance of Puccini’s Turandot by the Wichita Grand Opera at The Carlsen Center in Overland Park, KS! Very moving! I hope they come back to the Kansas City area. After that performance and after the artistic director’s comments before about how the Wichita Grand Opera performs traditional opera I will be driving to Wichita to see their performances. I greeted the director during an intermission and told him how much I appreciated his words about traditional performances. He said something very profound to me. He said that a person wouldn’t paint a mustache on a beautiful painting in order to contemporize it so why should we with music? If you want contemporary interpretations, write your own opera and leave the great operas alone. A breath of fresh air as so many companies stumble over themselves to see who can come up with the craziest contemporary interpretations of great music.

A truly fantastic performance from all! I have heard over and over again from students resounding praises for the show! It was such a great experience for them; one that will not soon be forgotten.

I attended the opera last Sunday at the Carlsen Center. Turandot is my favorite opera. The performance of Turnadot was the best I have ever seen. I could just feel the emotion of the story. I loved it. Excellent performance! Thank you for bringing Turandot to Overland Park.
