April 2024
The Wichita Grand Opera proudly presented Leonard Bernstein's brilliant comic operetta, Candide, on April 27th and 28th, 2024, at Century II Concert Hall. Acclaimed actor Kelsey Grammer, of Cheers and Frasier fame, starred in this concert version production and brought his signature wit and charisma to tell the tale of this glittering satire. The production also featured Metropolitan Opera singer and stage director Emily Pulley as well as rising stars Jonathan Johnson and Amy Owens, who performed the leading roles of Candide and Cunegonde.
Inspired by Voltaire's eponymous novella, the story follows the adventures of the innocent Candide on a quest for meaning and happiness in a world ravaged by absurdity and chaos. Bernstein's dazzling score incorporates a whirlwind of musical styles, ranging from lush European romanticism to jazzy American rhythms, whirling waltzes, a sardonic bolero, and a red-hot tango. With Grammer's legendary wit, the vocal pyrotechnics of the cast, and the vibrant energy of the WGO Chorus & Orchestra, this concert was an unforgettable night of passion and laughter.
